ArtZona in Nowa Huta

ARTzona is one of four pilot investments developed under the ReNewTwon project. The main objective of the activities executed in the framework of the ARTzona pilot project is to create a modern open space allowing to hold various types of cultural events, accessible to the local community and local institutions. The building selected for the investment was originally a garage built in the 1950s. The regeneration of a post-industrial building by providing it with a new function has also been an important component of the pilot investment project.

The location of the investment is Nowa Huta district in Kraków. Nowa Huta was developed in 1949 as a modern industrial town autonomous of Kraków, serving the enormous metallurgical complex created under Stalin’s decree. The town, populated mostly by industrial workers, was to become an ideal socialist town for the communist propaganda. In 1951, it was connected to Kraków as its new district. With its wide streets and attractive houses, Nowa Huta was to be the cradle of a new socialist society planned by the Leaders of the Communist Party.

In the course of the ReNewTwon pilot investment in Nowa Huta, the space of the post-socialist garage was adapted to serve, for instance, as a gallery, a meeting place for artists, a space for performances, concerts and multimedia presentations as well as trade fairs for local entrepreneurs. The mobile exhibition and  multimedia systems were purchased for the purposes of organization of various cultural activities for the local community. The ARTzona project is a response to the problems and needs reported by residents of the district and diagnosed in the Local Redevelopment Program for 'the old Nowa Huta' and then discussed in detail during public consultations organized by the C. K. Norwid Community Centre in 2008-2010 with local organizations, institutions, artists, tourists and residents of Nowa Huta.

Although work is still in progress, the ARTzona project was launched already in 2012. In September 2012, the first concert in ARTzona was held. It was organized in partnership with the local Jazz&Beat&Rock Nowa Huta Music Association (Nowohuckie Stowarzyszenie Muzyczne - Jazz&Beat&Rock). Two music studios started to operate – a commercial one, and the other run by the local NGO – New Perspective Foundation (Fundacja Nowych Ujęć). Both studios are places where local young artists (mainly from Nowa Huta, but also from other parts of Kraków) meet and develop their musical skills. Specially for this project, a movie studio and film workshops will be created. The youth movie centre will also be opened.
