The ReNewTown Final Conference in Ljubljana

The ReNewTown Final Conference took place on 11 - 12 of February 2014 at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Economics (FELU) in Slovenia. The conference was held under the patronage of the Third President (2007-2012) of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr. Danilo Türk.

The conference was attended by the international experts in the field of urban regeneration, including both practitioners as well as academics. The Conference was successful in establishing a forum for exchange between academic researchers, urban planners and decision-makers. It provided a broader perspective on the competitiveness and attractiveness of post-socialist cities in Central and Eastern Europe.

The 11th issue of the ReNewTown Newsletter is available

We are very pleased to release the eleventh issue of the ReNewTown project newsletter.

The current issue introduces an interview with Professor Grzegorz Węcławowicz, PhD, an recognized expert on urban revitalization of post-socialist cities and the “Transnational manual for districts with a socialist burden - a positive change in your neighbourhood”. The document contains tips and advice, as well as an illustrative scenario of how to plan and implement urban renewal projects. The issue includes also details on Final ReNewTown Project Conference. It will be held at University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Economics, February 11th and 12th, 2014.

Post-socialist housing estates suffer from many shortcomings. However, ReNewTown draws inspiration from towns that have successfully resolved local problems and changed these places into locations that are pleasant to live in.

Seminars in Nowa Huta and Velenje pointed out close interrelation between physical and social actions in urban heritage revitalization projects

Exchange of Experiences Seminar on ReNewTown Handbook of Models

Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization, Polish Academy of Sciences, a leading partner of the ReNewTown project, represented by Professor Grzegorz Węcławowicz and Magdalena Wątorska-Dec, presented one of the main results of the ReNewTown project - a Handbook of Models at the 8th National Scientific Conference 21st Century Cities in Prószków near Opole. It was one of the six Exchange of Experience Seminars, which are implemented as part of the ReNewTown project.

ReNewTown meeting in Prague, March 5-7, 2013

The three-day partnership meeting organised by the Prague 11 Metropolitan District was an opportunity to present and evaluate new activities carried out in the ReNewTown pilot investments. An important part of the meeting were the presentations of the selected good practice examples of urban revitalization projects and education facilities management in Prague 11. Prague 11, referred to as the “South City”, has the biggest panel housing in the Czech Republic (one of the largest areas in Central Europe). Prague 11 developed many projects focused on the development of public space, building regeneration, business and investment support, free time activities and environmental protection. The district has also implemented a number of successful projects aiming at the reduction of energy losses in public buildings.

We have launched the Facebook account of ARTzona, the ReNewTown pilot investment. You can now follow the latest news on its inspiring cultural activity. The main objective of ARTzona is to revitalize post-industrial buildings and to create a modern, open space with the potential to hold various types of cultural activities, accessible to the local community and local institutions. ARTzona is located in Nowa Huta district in Krakow.

Evaluation of ReNewTown investments and newsletter no 7

The technical meeting in Ljubljana was focused on the evaluation of the implemented investments within ReNewTown project. It was also opportunity to observe the selected good practice examples of urban revitalization from Ljubljana and Nova Gorica as well as meeting Slovenian experts.

New issue of newsletter (No 7) is closely related to Slovenian experiences, examples of initiatives and implemented investment in Velenje.

Finalization of the ReNewTown pilot project in Velenje

We present the recently completed ReNewTown pilot project aimed at creating a multi-functional public space in the Velenje housing estate (constructed in the 1970s). The project was implemented with the active participation of residents of the housing estate. The most interesting feature of this project was the participation of volunteers in construction.

The ReNewTown meeting was held September 18th-20th, 2012. It was organised by Agency for Development of the Gemer Region. The meeting was attended by representatives of local government in Hnusta and activists working for local and regional development who presented results of their projects carried out in the Gemer region of Slovakia.

Brochures on the results of surveys and good practices

We present brochures on the results of surveys conducted in 8 Central European cities. The main objective of this surveys was to update and supplement the knowledge of the selected aspects of life quality problems and the revitalization actions taken so far in the post-socialist cities. The study was conducted in the cities of Karlsruhe (DE), Cottbus (DE), Usti and Labem (CZ), Chomutov (CZ), Rimavska Sobota (SK), Hnúšťa (SK), Velenje (SI) and Nova Gorica (SI). Important part of the study was the identification of good practices aiming at improving life quality of urban areas built during the socialist period. Presented good practices are just examples selected from the database of good practices available on the ReNewTown project website.

The ReNewTown databases have been completed

The ReNewTown project is built on the experiences of related past and current initiatives from last 20 years. One of the key results of the project is the development of databases containing good practices, initiatives and experts in the field of regeneration urban areas built during the socialist period. Databases data can be searched by country and main priority objectives.

Public consultation meeting

Public consultation took place on 29 of May 2012 at the headquarters of Institute of Geography and Spatial Organisation Polish Academy of Scientists (IGiPZ PAN), Twarda 51/55 street. The subject of the consultation were problems of Ursynów district and possible options to solve or mitigate their effects. Particular attention was paid to the conditions of life of the inhabitants, including in particular the problem of an insufficient number of parking spaces on housing estates, possibilities of development new functions of public space on residential areas and the role of citizens in the management of public spaces on housing estates. The meeting was attended by Mayor of Ursynów District Piotr Guział, representatives of local government, scientists from Warsaw University of Technology, University of Warsaw and IGiPZ PAN.

Brochures on the results of surveys and public consultation meeting

The public discussion on results of surveys conducted in Ursynów is scheduled for 29 of May 2012. The discussion will take place at the headquarters of IGiPZ, Twarda 51/55 street (ground floor). Special attention will be devoted to the identified problems of housing estates and possible solutions. The meeting is open for public. Detailed results of the surveys conducted in Ursynów were published in the brochure “Report on the surveys conducted in Ursynów”.


Na 29 maja 2012 r., w siedzibie IGiPZ PAN, na ulicy Twardej 51/55 (parter budynku) zaplanowana jest publiczna dyskusja nad wynikami badań przeprowadzonych na osiedlach mieszkaniowych Ursynowa. Dyskusja ma na celu omówienie otrzymanych wyników w kontekście zidentyfikowanych problemów i możliwości ich rozwiązania. Spotkanie ma charakter otwarty. Szczegółowe wyniki badań zostały opublikowane w broszurze „Raport z badań ankietowych przeprowadzonych na Ursynowie”.

The fourth ReNewTown partnership meeting in Kraków

The 4th ReNewTown meeting was held on 24-26 April 2012. It was organised by C.K. Norwid Centre in Kraków. The meeting was attended by scientists and leaders of the local revitalization projects in Kraków who presented results of their studies and regeneration projects carried out in Nowa Huta and other post-socialist urban areas of Kraków and Małopolska region.

The third ReNewTown partnership meeting in Karlsruhe

The technical meeting “Regeneration through bonding: the role of new urban governance” was held on 1-2 February 2012. It was organised by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (PP4). The idea of ReNewTown technical meetings is to transfer expert knowledge on urban regeneration issues from different countries within the partnership by inviting local and national experts from the host country. This time the selected topic concentrated on citizens engagement in the context of four pilot actions implemented in Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia.

The 3rd issue of the newsletter and the new flyer is available

We are very pleased to present the third issue of the ReNewTown project Newsletter. In this issue we present the ArtZONA initiative, one of four pilot actions realized within the ReNewTown project. The aim of the pilot action is to seek to find a model for development of cultural and social offer in districts with socialist burden. ReNewTwon is also a platform for discussion on urban regeneration problems beyond the project’s own case studies research. It focuses on the most interesting urban regeneration examples in countries involved in the work of ReNewTown (Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Germany). Therefore this issue also presents a project, the aim of which is regeneration of public park in a large housing estate in Cracow. You are also invited to see our new ReNewTwon flayer which presents key facts about the project and its consortium.

The second ReNewTown partnership meeting in Velenje

The second ReNewTown partnership meeting took place on 4-6 October 2011 in Velenje. It was a 3-day event consisting of the Steering Committee Meeting, a study visit and a technical meeting. The event agenda included among others a presentation on ReNewTown project’s progress in pilot actions implementation (in Cracow, Prague, Hnusta and Velenje), modernistic heritage, its value and possible models of preservation, as well as the economic, environmental and demographic context of post-socialist cities’ and towns’ development.

The ReNewTown project has been successfully launched

Initial meeting, inaugurating ReNewTown project ('kick‐off meeting') took place in Warsaw between 24th and 26th of May 2011.
