    1. Improved provision of local cultural and social events.

The idea of establishing a hotel for cultural events was created by an architect in cooperation with a local theatre. One hundred juveniles renovated a prefabricated high-rise. The high-rise was transformend into a hotel and a venue for a international culture festival. During two weeks in September 2003, people were able to stay at the hotel and to join various cultural activities in the same location organised by international artists that were invited by the local theatre.

    2. Improved involvement of the local community in events organized in its quarter.

One hundred juveniles did all the renovation works in the former prefabricated high-rise and transformed the building into a hotel and a centre for cultural activities. All in all 91 rooms were set up, furniture was sponsored by citizens and the inner design was created by the juveniles themselves. Furthermore citizens were invited to join the two weeks cultural festival and to stay at the hotel together with many artists in one of the renovated rooms.

Halle Neustadt is a shrinking district that belongs to the municipality of Halle. 30% of the housing stock became vacant after the reunification and the district is known as a place where lots of social problems occur: Housing vacancy, high unemployment rate, high amount of welfare recipients and the loss of many social and cultural initiatives. As a reaction buildings were refurbished, a service centre was established and the transport system was improved. But apart from those large regeneration activities, projects that improve the social and cultural life are also highly recommended in the district and in this sense the above mentioned project supports the enhancement of the district as an attractive place for living.
