    II. TYPOLOGY
    1. Improved attractiveness of the architecture of the socialist buildings.
    2. Improved involvement of the local community in events organized in its quarter.

Local households were invited to join the project and to live in a Gruenderzeit apartment for trial. Apart from the objective to change the opinion of citizens about living in Gruenderzeit buildings in the inner city, the participating people were involved in a social research study to evaluate people’s experiences and ideas. The results of the study will help to get more knowledge about how to raise the acceptance and appreciation of living in the inner city and in existing old dwellings.

    3. Identified new functions for structures from the era of socialism in 1945 - 1989).

The apartments that were offered for trial living were completely refurbished and furnished to offer a new quality of living in Gruenderzeit buildings located in the inner city. People should get an impression of how life in such a building feels like when the apartments are renovated and furnisehd in a modern way.

    III. SUPPLEMENT

Goerlitz offers two different places for living to its 56,000 inhabitants: People can live at the city edge in newly-built quarters or in refurbished and renovated Gründerzeit apartments in the inner city. People prefer to live in the newly-built quarters because Gruenderzeit apartments are often stigmatised as apartments that were famous for its bad conditions during the GDR. Therefore around 5,000 refurbished and renovated buildings in the inner city of Goerlitz are still vacant. The project offers two fully refurbished and furnised apartments for trial living, so that people are able to eliminate prejudices.
