    II. TYPOLOGY
    1. Improved attractiveness of the architecture of the socialist buildings.
    2. Identified new functions for structures from the era of socialism in 1945 - 1989).

The eight constructed town villas, which were made out of a former prefabricated building, improved the quality of housing in a housing estate that were built during the GDR. The town villas offer more space than the former building made of prefabricated slabs through bigger apartments. Furthermore the building’s heigh was reduced, balkonies were installed and the facade appearance was improved through colours. Due to the fact that all apartments had already been rented at the the project beginning, the renters were able to communicate their wishes to the architect regarding unique flat designs. The project is also an example for the reuse of already existing construction material in a new and modern way.

    III. SUPPLEMENT

With the reunification and the decline of the textile industry, the housing district of Leinefelde Südstadt in the southern part of Leinefelde was affected by a high unemployment rate and by the loss of population. In 1989 nearly 16,000 inhabitants lived in Leinefelde Südstadt but the population was reduced for more than 37% during the last decades. Therefore Leinefelde is one of the cities in East Germany were large urban regeneration acitivities took place, both funded under the Socially Integrative City programme and the programme Restructuring East. In preparation of urban regeneration actions, information and cooperation activities for and with inhabitants/citizens took place, such as surveys, workshops, tours, brochures, flyers, etc.. Lots of different regeneration activities were implemented and the above mentioned transformation of a prefebricated building into town villias is just one of many
