    II. TYPOLOGY
    1. Improved condition & quality of the public space between the blocks of flats.

One of the sub-projects of the initiative „Blocks of flats – Reactivation“ (Blokowiska – Reaktywacja) is „Org.Garden“ conducted by Mika Grochowska. The idea is to encourage the inhabitanst to transform the underdeveloped and neglected spaces between blocks of flats into the gradens full of flowers. The project has also a sociological dimension – clearly implies that you have to constantly create and work towards a better future. There were 3 places chosen: • Trodden lawn between blocks on Trocks street • The space around the tree which was planted in the middle of the ground PGR Bródno (garbage is thrown there) • The space between Wyszogrodzka and Chodecka street (undeveloped flowerbeds) The additional effect of the project is to create a form for permision to develop grardens. The form will be elaborated together with Targówek District Office. Contact:mikagroch@tlen.pl

    2. Improved involvement of the local community in events organized in its quarter.

Targówek District Office initiated the regeneration process of the district. The main objective of the project is to encourage discussion and start socio-cultural events. The project strives to involve all local communities: local authorities, governments, NGOs, artists, entrepreneurs and residents in the process of urban renewal in Targówek district. The project treats the idea o revitalization of blocks of flats in a creative way. By attracting many interests groups Targówek District Office plans to develop a long-term strategy for social regeneration in the district. The first step was the international conference that was held on 17-18/06/2011 together with the workshops and artistic events. The event gathered experts on urban regeneration from Poland and abroad and there were some examples of revitalization projects presented (e.g. STADTUMBAU from East Germany, Bródnowski Canal in Warsaw). The local communities are directly involved in the project by the possibility of participation in various events and subprojects: 1. project of Paweł Althamer and Michał Mioduszewski: 3-week workshops, during which the participants created the symbolic human sculpture „Self-Portrait“ featuring the district as a living organism. http://www.brodno.waw.pl/2011/06/09/zobacz-autoportret-targowka/ 2. Photo workshops „A postcard from Targówek” conducted by Tomek Kaczor i Jerzy Parafinowicz (OkołoFotograficzna Group) for residents to create the series of postcards that will be used as Tragówek promotional gadget.

    III. SUPPLEMENT

Targówek is a district in Warsaw, Poland located in the northern part of the city. It is divided into two parts: residential and industrial. About 30% of the district's area is covered by municipal parks, such as Lasek Bródnowski, Park Bródnowski and Park Wiecha in the eastern part of the district. Targówek has a population of 123 473 inhabitants and covers the area of 24,2 km2. After the war, Targówek was recognised as one of the poorest, peripheral districts of the capital city. Everything changed in the 1970’s, when the construction of a massive housing estate begun. Today, thanks to well thought-out spatial development plans and good investments, bleak complexes of blocks of flats are gradually transformed into a modern place.
