    II. TYPOLOGY
    1. Improved provision of local cultural and social events.

      The Urban Road Project includes a theoretical model of development of local multifunctional center build on the district’s potential. The main idea of the project was to create a local functional center of the district, which would: • constitute a local labor market (being an additional generator of financial resources for the district in the form of taxes from the services provided); • become a place, which fulfills cultural and entertainment needs of the residents; • radiate to the outside and attract residents from other districts of Warsaw. The idea derived from two main premises: • the need of the residents to develop a space, which is common, architectonically and functionally attractive, sustainable, friendly, characteristic for Ursynów, and which uses the social and economic capacity of the district • the potential of the district understood as a ‘locale’ - a physical place where there is specific environment for interaction. The intention of the project was to use all the values of the area, such as: • available urban functions; • central location within the district; • free space for future construction; • land mainly under ownership of housing cooperatives to rebuild and reconstruct the place into a local business and cultural center.

    2. Improved condition & quality of the public space between the blocks of flats.

      The concept includes the idea of life quality improvement in a residential district with socialist architectonic burden .

    3. Improved support for the development of small business operators in the area of blocks of flats.

      The idea of creating a local labor market ‘around’ the ‘Urban Road’ was thought to engage local entrepreneurship in its development, as well as to form a cluster of local business

    4. Improved involvement of the local community in events organized in its quarter.

      The project involves the local stakeholders in the realization of the concept. The target groups of the project are as following: a. inhabitants of the district (prospectively as many as can be reached) b. local government c. regional government (Warsaw city) d. private investors who could contribute to the spatio-material reconstruction of the area e. presidents of housing co-operatives f. local experts (architects, urban planners) g. entrepreneurs interested in establishing their business activities within the area encompassed by the Urban Road project

    III. SUPPLEMENT

    Information about the district: Ursynów – one of 18 districts of Warsaw, a large – mainly residential - area of 48.6 sq km. According to the Central Statistical Office (GUS), in 2009 the number of inhabitants of Ursynów equaled 148 876 thousand. Ursynów is situated in the southern part of Warsaw, bordering with three other districts: Mokotów, Włochy and Wilanów, as well as with the municipalities of Piaseczno, Konstancin-Jeziorna and Lesznowola. Until 2002 Ursynów was a separate municipality. Specifically, the participants of the study tour were acquainted with the Urban Road project, which constitutes an important example of a local, bottom-up knowledge-based initiative which focuses on the ability of Ursynów to take advantage of and benefit from the potential it possesses. Information on exact location of the project: The area which was chosen to undergo transformation processes is located nearby the Indira Gandhi street, which is one of the main and most centrally located streets of Ursynów, a perpendicular to the main transportation artery - the KEN avenue and the METRO line. The intersection with the KEN avenue constitutes a busy location were such urban functions are represented as: transportation node (METRO line, bus stops), local administration center (the local Town Hall, seat of the District’s Mayor), local cultural center (location of a movie-theater, restaurants, bars). The institutions and organizations which were involved in the project were: • The Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization (on a free basis through the participation of scientists in the works of the project and in its promotion); • The Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Warsaw (preparation of architectonic projects); • The Association “Our Ursynów’ (in creating a political program, which included the ‘Urban Road’ concept in its objectives); • The Association ‘The Place – Ursynów (in registration’), the aim of which will be to promote the Urban Road initiative, as well as similar projects; • PASSA – the Ursynów weekly magazine, which was engaged in the description and promotion of the project No project website,but many articles might be found on http://www.passa.waw.pl (in Polish)
