The association Kunstplatte e.V., which provides various cultural offers to citizens, was founded by a housing association ‘SWB’ and the local gallerist Monika von Puttkamer in 1998 due to the request of many local residents who wanted to have a cultural institution being established in their prefabricated housing district. From 1999 – 2003 the municipality and the Federal Labour Office supported the project by financing a part-time employee. Since 2003 the association has to finance itself fully with the support of many people who work for the association voluntarily.

    8. Originally the project was an idea of the housing association SWB in Stendal and the local gallery owner Monika von Puttkamer. It was intended to implement a short-time project called cultural and art weeks in the district of Stendal for four weeks, but because of the great success local residents requested for the foundation of a long-term cultural institution. Local residents work their voluntarily and since 2003 the Kunstplatte e.V. is a self-financed organisation. Originally it was planned to get more support by local authorities but this did not happen.

Stendal is divided into two parts: the regenerated inner-city with a nice historical centre on the one hand and the prefabricated housing districts with various social problems on the other hand. The project intends to incorporate the housing district Stadtsee into the city-centre’s life by offering several cultural events for everyone. The physical distance should be removed by reducing the social distance between the citizens.

In the city centre of Stendal a lot cultural events and programmes are provided, but the housing districts, which are located in distance to the city centre, had a lack with regards to social or cultural activities. The association ‘Kunstplatte e.V.’ makes a contribution to the cultural life in the housing district ‘Stadtsee’. The cultural offers are well accepted by local residents because ‘Kunstplatte e.V.’ offers a great variety of events and activities.
